Menopause Clinic

Description

Menopause is a natural part of a woman’s life but for many, it can bring a number of challenges that can have a significant impact on quality of life.

Physical symptoms include hot flushes, night sweats, irregular periods and decreased libido. Psychological symptoms of mood swings, emotional lability, anxiety, and sleep disturbance can be even more disruptive. Symptoms can impact on self-esteem, working and personal relationships and general sense of wellbeing. Perimenopause and menopause most often effect women in their late forties and fifties, when life is already very busy, juggling family, maybe elderly parents, and work commitments. The rollercoaster of symptoms can be very difficult to navigate and will affect women in different ways.

That’s why it needs time to discuss all aspects of the experience, both negative and positive, to really focus on every woman’s individual needs and help with them.

Dr Carmel Murphy graduated from UCC in 1992. She has always had a special interest in women’s health & has undergone extra training in menopause care. She is a member of The British Menopause Society and very passionate about women’s wellbeing at all stages of life.

She is now offering 45-minute consultation appointments for women who wish an in-depth individual assessment of their midlife health. You can book an appointment by contacting reception and requesting a menopause clinic appointment.

When does the menopause happen?

The menopause can start at any time from your late 30s to late 50s. For most women it happens between age 48 and 55. A natural menopause between the ages of 40 and 45 is called an early menopause. A natural menopause before the age of 40 is considered a premature menopause.

Premature menopause can be a particularly difficult experience and needs investigation, assessment and treatment.

For some women, the menopause may be caused by cancer treatments such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy, or by having ovaries removed during a hysterectomy (womb surgically removed). This sudden stop in the production of hormones may lead to symptoms. These may be another complication of an already traumatic illness.
