Taking of Cervical Smears
Our practice is registered with the Cervical Check Programme. This Programme entitles women aged between 25 and 60 to free cervical smears. You will need to bring your PPS number with you to avail of this free service.
It is recommended that (with prior normal smear results) a woman should have a repeat smear every 3 years if under 45 yrs and every 5 years if over 45 yrs. This test is to detect early pre-cancerous changes in the cervix. This is not a test for sexually transmitted infections, although these can be carried out at the same time if you arrange this in advance. This is an extra test and will incur a charge.

If you feel you are due a routine smear please make an appointment with our practice nurse. If you are unsure as to when you had your last smear the nurse will check your records for you.
When should I have the test
A smear test is most accurate if taken when you are mid-cycle (ie.day 10-20 of your cycle).
Results
You should receive your results within approximately 8 weeks, the result will come directly from CervicalCheck. Once you are registered with Cervical Check, they will recall you when you are next due.
